Second Chances – Chapter 57 July 26, 2010
Sore and slightly hung over, Beth woke up late that morning to an empty bed. Sadness and a familiar sense of loneliness crept up her body as she called out for Rob. At first he did not answer but emerged from the bathroom after what felt like an eternity.
“I hope I did not wake you,” he said as he entered the bedroom, wearing only a towel. Seeing her face, he said, “What’s the matter? Are you okay?”
“I thought you were gone…”
“I’m sorry I let you wake to an empty bed after last night,” he said as he crossed the room to her side.
Staring into space and pulling the sheet tightly around her body, Beth said, “I just got scared, old emotions crept up on to me.”
“Darling, I am sorry,” he said as he sat down on the bed next to her and touched her cheek tenderly.
“I thought that I had gotten past most of my insecurities. I thought I’d be over Joe and all of that by now. Promise me Rob, you’ll come back,” she practically begged of him.
“I will do everything in my power to be next to you as soon as I can. Until then, you will become my inspiration, my muse. The misery being apart from you will be my motivation as a solider wishing only to return home,” he told her as he looked deep into her eyes and watched as tears began to form in her eyes. “I will be back before the premier and that will give us another reason to celebrate.”
“I know. I am so used to seeing you almost every day. It will take some time to get used to you being an ocean and thousands of miles away.”
Rob held her close, with only the white sheet between them as Beth did her best to hold back the tears. “Oh, I am going to miss you so much my darling Elizabeth, but I have to get dressed and get you home before my flight this afternoon.” Beth nodded and held on to Rob for a while longer before going into the bathroom.
When she re-entered the room, covered in only a towel, Rob was completely dressed. She had heard the door open while she was in the bathroom and realized that Rob had his bag retrieved from his room so he could dress.
One she was dressed and her formal wear was packed away, the two lovers headed out of the room they had shared and off to the car that brought them to her house.
Rob walked Beth to the door and saw her inside. The kids practically attacked the two as they excitedly bubbled about how they had seen the adults on TV the night before. Rob said good-bye to Mike and Amy and explained why he had to go away to work but that he would be back in a few months. They seemed disappointed but seemed to understand.
Beth sent the children off to play and she walked Rob to the door. “They seem quite taken with you,” she said.
“They are great children and I am quite taken with them… and you. I was thinking, when I get back, maybe we could all go up to Ondovi for a few days.”
“That would be nice, I think they would like that,” she said as she wrapped her arms around him. “I am going to miss you so much,” and she planted a big kiss on his lips. They parted lips and she removed her arms from him. “I want you to have your last image of me without tears in my eyes, so if you don’t leave soon that won’t be the case.”
“My darling Elizabeth, I could never forget your beautiful face. I will do my best to be back by your side.”
She said as she kissed his cheek and opened the door for him. “Give me a call when you get settled in Prague so that I know you got there safely.”
Rob nodded and climbed into the car, but before he completely disappeared behind the tinted glass, he took one last look at her and then closed the door. She stood in the doorway for another minute before she went inside to tell the ‘G’ rated tales of glamor and excitement. The ‘R’ rated version would have to wait to be told.
Beth knew she was going to shed many a tear for her new lover until he returned.
