Second Chances – Chapter 28 December 11, 2009

New Year’s Eve approached quickly for Beth even with the kids away. She didn’t even see Rob except on the set. Everyone was trying their best to finish up the work before the break.

December 31st, Beth actually had off and spent most of the day getting ready for the party. Her day began with a massage, which was her new guilty pleasure and then had her nails done. Her hair and makeup people were coming to her house to work their magic. Beth was excited but very nervous about who she could possibly meet at the party but also because she was going on a real date with Rob. He had been very understanding, knowing she needed both time and space to figure out things for herself.

Friendship was something they both wanted but Rob had not really said how serious he wanted to get with her. She wasn’t looking for a marriage proposal but she needed to know that it wasn’t going to be a casual thing.

At eight-thirty, Beth’s doorbell rang. Billy, her hair stylist, answered the door and let Rob in. “Ms. Edwards will be down in a minute,” he told the tuxedo clad Rob and went back upstairs. Upon returning to Beth’s bedroom, where she was getting ready, Billy reported to her. “Mr. Cobb is down stairs waiting for you.”

How does he look?” she asked.

Girl, you two are going to blow the roof off of the joint when you enter that party.”

Beth smiled. “Am I ready for my dress?” she asked her makeup artist, Paula.

I think so. I’ll put a few supplied your purse for touch ups.”

Beth got up and began to take the gown off the hanger. Billy helped her put the corseted top over her head and zipped it up. Then he cinched it up to give her waist even more definition than she already had. After putting on her strappy heals on, Beth admired her reflection. The slit in the skirt went right up to her hipbone but it made her legs look longer. It was a perfect dress.

With the approval of Paula and Billy, Beth took her purse and left the bedroom. Paula and Billy promised to lock up on their way out after she had left.

At the top of the stairs, Beth paused to admire her escort. Rob looked amazing in his tux, very distinguished.

Happy New Year’s Mr. Cobb. I hope I didn’t keep you waiting too long?” she asked from the top of the stairs. Rob looked up at her with a look of awe as Beth descended the stairs. Beth prayed that she wouldn’t fall down the stairs.

Happy New Year, Ms. Edwards. I couldn’t imagine you looking more amazing. You are beautiful,” Rob replied as he walked over to the stairs to help the last few steps, holding her hand gently.

Thank you. You look stunning,” she told him. Rob raised the hand he held and gently kissed it.

Are you ready to go?” he asked as he tucked her arm securely over his. Beth nodded and the two left the house.

Outside, waiting for them was a black stretched limousine and driver standing at the ready to help them in. Rob helped Beth in, not letting the driver touch her. Secured inside the car, the driver smoothly pulled out to take them to the party.
